Kanakanjali is that magic moment that every girl awaits. She leaves behind the environment where she grew up amid love and affection to enter a new era in her life…marriage. As a part of her wedding ceremony, she throws back a handful of rice, to confirm that she has repaid her debts to her parents.
But this symbolic gesture has a far wider significance. Does just this action mean she has no further responsibility towards her parents? Or do parents, after this, expect nothing from their daughters?
A powerful story, on this intriguing subject, is brought alive on your TV screens by ZEE
Bangla from August 29. Don t forget to switch on at 8 pm.
Shuvro Chowdhury, a saree dealer, is the proud father of Sreya and Jhimli. His elder son
Probal is a textile engineer and younger son Promit, a management graduate.
Probal and Promit are a dream come true for Shuvro. But he has never neglected his daughters.
Alas, this middleclass businessman could afford the best only for his two sons. He still tried to give his daughters all he could. Though Sreya and Jhimli had to settle for less due to their father s financial constraints, they are happy with what they get. Since Ruma, Shuvro s beloved wife, gave him four precious gems to nurture, he cherished twin objectives. First: Probal and Promit supporting him to take his business to great heights. Second:Finding worthy husbands for Sreya and Jhimli.
Sreya, his eldest daughter and the family s third child, had attained marriageable age. Forever
dependable, as nicknamed by her brothers, Sreya is on her way to be a graduate. Jhimli, on the other hand, is a wild child. As the youngest, she is pampered by all, but most by Shuvro. Jhimli has a special relationship with her elder sister. If Jhimli is the most pampered, Sreya is the most loved one in the family. No one can imagine life without her. Though quiet, Sreya always manages to overcome the impossible.
Shuvro s family life is enviously picture perfect.
But life has the uncanny ability to stamp reality on dreams. Probal and Promit do not nurture
their father s vision. They almost desert him. Emotionally drained and financially bankrupt,
Shuvro feels he has no one to lean on. This is when he discovers a new Sreya. One who fights
for her father s lost honor.
Kanakanjali is aptly evolved round the father-daughter relationships, where a happy family
is almost ruined under the pressure of selfish interests. A father, who is in despair, has his
honor resurrected by his daughters. Kanakanjali is a moving story. Where, unlike the marriage ritual and despite all odds, daughters rebuild their father s life, by supporting him through thick and thin.
Watch Kanakanjali from 29th August every Mon to Sat at 8 PM only on Zee Bangla.
